Dry Macular Degeneration

What is Dry Macular Degeneration?

Dry macular degeneration, also known as atrophic or non-neovascular macular degeneration, is a common eye condition characterized by the gradual deterioration of the macula, the central portion of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. Unlike wet macular degeneration, which involves the growth of abnormal blood vessels, dry macular degeneration is primarily characterized by the accumulation of small yellow deposits called drusen beneath the macula and thinning of the macular tissue.

Treatments for Dry Macular Degeneration

Treatment for dry macular degeneration focuses primarily on managing symptoms and slowing the progression of the disease. Currently, there is no cure for dry macular degeneration, but several strategies may help

  1. IZERVAY (avacincaptad pegol intravitreal solution) is a recently approved eye injection, used to treat geographic atrophy (GA), which is the advanced form of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
  2. Nutritional supplements: Studies such as the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) and AREDS2 have shown that certain nutritional supplements can help slow the progression of dry macular degeneration in some individuals. These supplements typically contain antioxidants like vitamins C and E, zinc, copper, and lutein/zeaxanthin.
  3. Lifestyle changes: Adopting a healthy lifestyle, including maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, exercising regularly, managing blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and avoiding smoking, may help reduce the risk of progression.
  4. Monitoring: Regular monitoring of vision by a retina specialist is essential for detecting any changes in vision and adjusting treatment as needed.

It’s important to note that while these treatments and strategies may help manage dry macular degeneration, they cannot reverse vision loss that has already occurred. Early detection and intervention are key to preserving vision and maintaining quality of life for individuals with macular degeneration. Regular eye exams are crucial for detecting the condition and monitoring its progression.
